Named after East London’s Brick Lane Indian Row,
Brick Lane Curry House (306-308 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003; 212.979.2900) was the first curry house of its kind in Manhattan, bringing Indian cuisine to a whole new level. Executive Chef Kartik Kumar joined Bricklane as Executive Chef 3 years back. And has been loved and accepted by all. Kartik’s dishes are both traditional and inventive, offering something for Indian food connoisseurs and novices alike. Diners may start with original appetizers, such as light and flavorful Grilled Fish Salad ; tasty Prawn Balchao ; or Lasuni Gobi , which are wonderfully crispy cauliflower florets. For the main course, Kartik offers 11 Different Curries (listed from the mildest to spiciest) which can be combined with Chicken, Lamb, Fish, Shrimp, Paneer, and Tofu. Unlike traditional Indian restaurants that only offer specific curry sauces with select meats, Brick Lane prides itself on its menu’s flexibility and “user friendly” concept, which allows its guests to customize dishes to their own particular liking. There is delicious curry choice for every discernable palate, from classics, such as Vindaloo and Tikka Masala, to more inventive, such as Jalfrezie and the excruciating hot, legendary Phaal, which is the basis for Brick Lane’s one-and-only P’hall of Fame (complete this dish, and you can be a Curry Monster too…we dare you!)
Other house specialties include Bricklane kabaab Roll’s, a dish consisting of Kabaab’s served in a fresh baked bread roll; and for Vegetarians, Malai Kofta’s and Bombay Aloo are just two of the various options offered by Kartik. More customary “From the Tandoor,” or clay oven specials, are also available, including Methi Salmon and Imli Ki Champe , which are lamb chops infused with a tangy tamarind, ginger and garlic marinade. For those who have a hard time to choosing, Kartik makes an incredible Tandoori Sizzler with an assortment of Tandoori Kabaab’s.
Brick Lane serves sensational Rice and Breads, such as Biryani’s, a rice dish compromising of Meats and cooked in its own Juices a Hyderabadi delicacy ; and Peshawari Naan , which is crusted with dried nuts and raisins. For Dessert, the choices range from Gulab Jamun’s, dumplings made out of reduced and dried milk, served in flavored sugar syrup, to Rice Kheer , or pudding, prepared hot or cold to the guest’s liking.
The décor at Brick Lane is as distinctive as the menu. The dining area has one long table that seats 16 to 18 people only. A very cozy European style dining feel to it. One narrow room!! Whose walls are painted with real curry and turmeric, creating soft orange and yellow hues. The entire space feels warm and quaint, yet vibrant, enhanced by its brick wall which is painted simply white. The unique “colander” light fixtures lighten up the place and rich feel of the solid wood walls and floor compliment the bright gloss of the big communal table which stands out right in the middle of the room.
Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, Brick Lane seats 14-16, and is an ideal location for casual dining, as well as social gatherings. Catering is also available for every size party and occasion. For more information and to view Brick Lane’s complete menu,
